A “Fixer Upper” inspired bakery sign

I don’t know about you guys, but since I’ve been off on maternity leave, I have fallen in love with HGTV’s Fixer Upper. Joanna Gaines is super talented and I love everything she does.  She also happens to be a conservative Christian who dresses modestly, and as the mother of two little girls, that’s certainly something I appreciate.

It’s not surprising that I also follow her blog and regularly check out Magnolia Market’s website to browse treasures she has for sell in her shop. I’ve been crushing on this sign, which I also saw in a few episodes of the show:

The sign, which appears to be metal, is $88 from Magnolia Market. I decided I could make my own version from a piece of poplar shelving I had left over from my daughters’ closet projects here and here. I promptly painted it Valspar Country White and printed off letters in a font I liked. You may have to play with the font a bit. I printed letters off twice before I was satisfied with the size and spacing.

Next, I traced the letters with a pencil.

I then broke out a small can of black paint and a tiny black brush that I got from Wal-Mart. The brushes are in the craft section and are “Folk Art” brand. They were about $3 for a multipack with four different sizes. I painted in the letters, but I bet you could also color them in with a permanent marker.

As you can see, it isn’t perfect. The paint bled in some areas and my tracing/painting hand wasn’t as steady as I’d hoped. I’m trying to remind myself that a true antique sign wouldn’t look perfect 🙂 I added some hanging hooks to the back.

I love how this looks hanging in our dining room. I may attempt to make some more signs 🙂

I really like how this turned out. What “Fixer Upper” inspired projects have you done?
