From nursery to “big girl room”

Our youngest daughter turned two in November. While I was in no hurry to take down the crib and transform her nursery to a toddler room, we couldn’t deny that the baby room just didn’t work for her anymore. Plus, she was climbing in and out of the crib and I was worried she’d get hurt.

Her nursery was plenty cute and most of the furnishings would still work. Let’s take a look at what her nursery used to look like:

The furniture was mostly still useful. My dad built both girls matching headboards before he died, so we definitely wanted to use those. We also changed up her artwork a bit, hung some new shelves, and got two new pieces of furniture. I chalk painted a nightstand from Christmas Tree Shops and changed the hardware, and painted a shelf from my childhood bedroom.

Here’s a look at Aubrey’s new digs:

The monogram is papier mache from Hobby Lobby.

Here’s the redone nightstand. The drawer pulls are from Hobby Lobby. The rug, frame and lamp are from her nursery.

The baskets are left over from her nursery and the shelves were on clearance at JoAnn Fabrics.

These are IKEA Bekvam spice racks. I painted them white.

I repainted her small frames and purchased a new piece of art from Hobby Lobby to tie the room together.

We are just waiting on some baskets I ordered for her shelves. They’re on back order and we will use them to store toys.

A sweet room for a sweet and sassy little lady. What room refreshers have you done lately?

From nursery to toddler room: transitioning my baby to a big girl room

My youngest daughter will be turning 2 in just a few months. While she is still small, she is getting older and growing everyday, and her needs are changing as well. My goal for her toddler room is to simply upgrade her nursery a tiny bit to make it reflect her changing needs, but without making a lot of changes or spending a lot.

Here is what her room currently looks like:

My dad built matching headboards for both my girls before he got sick. This is one of them:

I am hoping to keep the shabby chic feel of the room but make it a little less “baby.”

I love this bedding at Target:

(source)

I’d leave the same rug and curtain, but I think instead of the chair and end table, I might create a teepee. What little girl wouldn’t love a teepee?

(source)

I also think I’d like to get a small bookcase and paint the back of it light pink. I might use the shelf as a nightstand and use a few baskets to hold her small toys and books.

I also want to do a more updated gallery wall than what she currently has. I love this one!!

I am slowly but surely working on her room. I cannot wait to show you the results!

Happy birthday, Aubrey!

One year ago today we were blessed to finally meet this tiny little girl.

She was four weeks early, but took all day to come into the world. Aubrey Reed Boone was born about 25 hours after we were admitted to the hospital. She did things her way on her time, and she’s been marching to the beat of her own drum ever since.

Approaching Toddler Town: My Favorite Products for My Almost Toddler

My baby is almost not a baby anymore.  Boy, did it hurt to write that.  At ten months (almost eleven months)  she is a tiny,  giggly bundle of personality,  energy and sass.

As we are getting closer to having a one year old,  here are some things we could not live without for our tiny girl.

1.5 ounce Nuk Learner Cup

Little Miss is picky about her sippy cups.  We have just started offering her a cup and we went through about six different kinds before we found one she’d take. These have a soft spout like a bottle,  are easy to clean and they are cute.

2. Surprise by Stride Rite

Earlier this year,  Target began selling a line of shoes created by Stride Ride.  They are moderately priced,  which I think is important,  since they seem to outgrow shoes so quickly.  The shoes are well made and cute, and sturdy enough for when she decides to walk independently.

3. Oxo Roll up Bib

This thing is awesome!!  It protects baby’s clothes by catching spills and dribbles,  and it wipes clean.  If you buy nothing else on this list,  buy this Bib.

4. Britax Marathon convertible seat

My oldest daughter used this car seat from eighteen months until she turned five.  It’s not the cheapest seat on the market but it’s well worth the money. We’re buying another for Aubrey.

I hope this list is helpful.  As always,  please feel free to comment and add anything I may have left out.

Week in review Wednesday

Hi everyone! Boy have we been busy around here. Summer is coming to a close and we are preparing to go back to school. This week, we bought school supplies.

Our week started off poorly with both girls not feeling well.

But both girls began to feel better fairly quickly.

Then we went to West Virginia for the weekend to see my grandparents.

The weather is so much nicer up there than around here. We actually got to spend some time outside.

Then we went to visit my aunt and uncle and took a really nice walk with some beautiful views.

We had so much fun! Hope you are having a great week!

Check back tomorrow for some back porch updates.

Week in Review Wednesday

What an extremely busy weekend and week!

This weekend, we went swimming at my husband’s grandmother’s house. Aubrey went swimming for the first time and loved it! Emorie, as usual, didn’t want to get out.

On Sunday, we went to the church where I grew up and haven’t been in probably 10 years. We went there to watch my cousin participate in the graduate recognition service. I was a little nervous about both my littles being out in “big church,” but both did great.

On Monday, my precious girl had swim class, and she is doing so well. See this video of her jumping in:

My sweet Aubrey has started to crawl a little and she has really been practicing her new skill. I have a feeling this kid is going to be everywhere shortly. Time to buy some baby gates!

On Tuesday, my eighth graders had their transition ceremony and school let out for students. My cousin also graduated high school Tuesday night.

What a blessed, wonderful week it’s been. School will be out for teachers on Thursday. We have so many exciting things planned and I cannot wait!

A quick organizing project: those baby toys

We have a toy storage problem at our house. More specifically, we have a baby toy storage problem. We had several toys stored in the crib, which meant we had to remove the toys before putting the baby in her crib.

image

We also had one way too small basket in the floor beside the crib to hold the toys.
image

We had to take the toys and sit them in her chair each time she went to nap or sleep. It was a major pain.

I spotted this burlap hamper at Hobby Lobby in the Spring Shop, so it was 40% off! Score!
image

Now those toys have a home and there is room for Aubrey in her crib. And we don’t have to move any toys.

What toy organization strategies have you discovered?

Week in review Wednesday

We had a very busy weekend this past weekend. First and most importantly, my sweet Emorie graduated from preschool.

image

This is significant because, thirteen years ago, I graduated high school and my first cousin graduated preschool. Now, thirteen years later, my cousin graduates high school this year and my daughter graduated preschool. We took this photo to commemorate the occasions.

image

We also went shopping for school clothes and swimsuits. Check out this cutie modeling her purchases.

image

Miss Aubrey was quite the cutie this weekend as well. Here are my favorite shots of her.

I hope you’re having a wonderful week. Happy Wednesday.

My top five baby feeding items

12961178_10100779369878752_6738544716046351054_o

Now that my baby girl is six months, She is eating solid foods. I thought I’d take a moment to talk with you about my favorite baby feeding products. Here are my top five, in no particular order.

graco

[babiesrus.com]

  1. We have a Graco Blossom 4-in-1 high chair system that we’ve used now with both children. What I like about it is that it is adjustable to use with an infant or toddler, but that it also includes a booster seat. You can use it for up to two years and with more than one kid.

baby food squeeze spoon

[walmart.com]

2. We also love these BPA Free Munchkin Squeezy-spoons for baby food on the go. We just fill up the spoon and put it in a plastic baggie in case it leaks (they haven’t yet) and head out the door.

tinydiner

[walmart.com]

3. Summer Infant Tiny Diner mats are where it’s at when your little one is a toddler. When Emorie was little, and she started eating table food, we’d take these to the restaurant, suction them to the table, and not have to worry about her eating off a dirty table. Plus, the mats are dishwasher safe and roll up for easy storage.

sassy baby teether

[walmart.com]

4. Sassy Feeding Teethers are awesome for when those pesky teeth come in. We like to put frozen grapes in ours for Aubrey. Another thing you can do is put crackers or other foods in them before they’re able to bite and chew.

nuby bowl

[walmart.com]

5. These Nuby suction bowls with the lids and spoons are great for traveling. We love that Aubrey can’t knock them off her tray, and we love that the spoons lock into the bowl lid.

Week in review Wednesday

Hi all! Hope you’re having a good week. We started ours off with the Superbowl. It didn’t turn out like we’d hoped, but I think our Panthers still had a heck of a season and will be even better next year.

On Monday, my big girl had a dentist appointment. She was the perfect patient and even chatted with the dentist and the dental hygienists.
