Making a new house feel like home

Casper and I created a combined list of items that will help make a new house feel like home.

Have you recently moved into a new home? Maybe you’ve just moved and you’re still living out of boxes. Or maybe you’re unpacked but you haven’t finished decorating. The following tips will make your blank slate house feel like a home.

1. Make your bedroom your sanctuary.

The first step to making your house a home is to create a bedroom that’s a calming, relaxing retreat.A new mattress, sheets and pillows will make your bedroom comfortable and relaxing.

2. Layer your home: curtains, throw pillows and rugs make your home feel cozy and inviting

A soft rug underfoot, curtains, and pillows really make your home feel cozy and inviting.

3. Artwork, or photographs

Your art work should be something that makes you happy. It can be a favorite painting by a favorite artist, or something that reminds you of a special memory. Photographs of loved ones or special memories are also good ideas. You can also find a plethora or affordable wall art options on Etsy and Pinterest.

4. A comfortable chair

A comfortable chair is a necessity. What’s better than coming home after a long day at work, and sinking into a cozy chair to relax? What about enjoying a cup of coffee on a Saturday morning in that same snuggly chair? This IKEA chair and ottoman would be perfect.

5. A calming scent

Studies have shown pleasant smells help make you feel relaxed and peaceful. Having a special, signature scent can make your home feel comfortable and relaxing.

Where you live should be more than just an address. It should be a place where you feel at rest and at peace. With these tips, you can make your house a home.

Using an agenda as a bullet journal…and being more organized as a result

I used to create and print this eleaborate calendar. It was great, but too big and too bulky, and it wasn’t very durable. It was also time consuming to design and assemble.

Enter this pretty little $14 agenda from Anthropologie.

It has whole month calendar pages

And weekly pages as well.

There are also blank pages in the back, which I’ve used for a number of things. Some of them I have used to paste in my own pages.

And on others, I draw or write in whatever I need it to be.

Now that I’m getting into bullet journaling, I can see how these boring, handwritten lists will be much more eye catching in the future.

I met a girl at a teaching workshop I attended earlier this year who had a gorgeous bullet journal. She graciously allowed me to photograph it.

I am learning to use my agenda to organize the things I am scheduled to do, the things I need to do, and the things I want to do. I am also using it to set some goals and keep track of other things.

Each evening, I look back over my day and I look to tomorrow to get a good idea of what I need to accomplish. I also make sure I’m ready for the next day.

I am encouraging my readers to share their agendas. How do you use your agenda? What does it look like? Do you make your own from scratch or customize a pre-made one like I do? Please comment and show me your agendas.

Have a wonderful Thursday.

Five favorites Fridays

Every so often I like to share some of my favorite things with you. It could be beauty products, clothing, cleaning or household items, and even children’s products.

This week there is no theme, nor rhyme or reason to my list. They are simply five things that I love.

1. Clarks wedges

I own a brown pair and a black pair and I LOVE them! They’re so comfy I teach in them. This particular model isn’t sold anymore, so here’s something similar.

Lily’s No Sugar Added chocolate bars. I’m slowly transitioning to 100% on plan with Trim Healthy Mama. THM is sugar free and these chocolate bars offer a way for me to still eat chocolate and stay on plan.

I love Essie nail polish, and I especially love this color. It’s called “in the cab-Ana” and I’m wearing it in the picture above of my sandals and feet 😜

This is so not a picture of me. I love Spanx Undie-tectables. Those things are awesome and perfect for my summer dresses.

Lastly, I’m loving Burts Bees moisturizing lip shimmer. It’s cheap, it looks good and it works really well.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this Five Favorites Friday list. Have a great weekend!!

Mommy Mondays: Best outdoor toys

 outdoor toys

We are an outdoors kind of family. We all four love being outside and enjoy playing together outside. While these are far from the only toys we enjoy playing with outside, here are some of our favorites. I have tried to include prices and links as well.

  1. PlasmaCar_Purple PlasmaCar, $49.97 at Amazon.com

My daughter received a Plasma Car for Christmas a year ago and loves the thing. Her preschool has several of these things too, and the kids love them. They are lots of fun for grown-ups too (yes, I’ve tested it. Don’t judge 🙂  We live on a gravel road with a gravel drive, but she can ride it in the garage. It’s also a favorite toy of mine because it doesn’t make noise, it doesn’t use batteries and it I don’t have to charge it.
bowling pins

2. Sunny Patch Giddy Buggy Bowling Set- $19.99 at Toys R Us (Currently out of stock)

We love this bowling set. It comes with two balls and a carrying case. You can use it inside and out. We even set up our own bowling alley in the dining room during the snow storms last winter. Everything is lightweight and you don’t have to worry about injuries or tearing anything up if you decide to use it indoors. Plus, it’s super cute 🙂

sidewalk chalk

3. Play Day 52-Piece Chalk Activity Bucket, $10.63 at Walmart

How much fun is sidewalk chalk? My kiddo loves it. She has actually been practicing handwriting and her letters with sidewalk chalk. We were beyond thrilled when some of her cousins gave her this sidewalk chalk art set for her birthday. She has been getting a kick out of it, and she just loves the stencils.

bubble machine

4. Little Kids Fubbles No Spill Bubble Machine, Pink and Purple, $12.99 at Walmart

We love bubbles at this house. We have large bottles of bubbles, a bubble mower, a bubble fan, bubble wands and the bubble machine pictured above. The coolest thing about this machine is you can’t spill the bubbles (trust me, we’ve certainly spilled lots of bubbles and ended up with slippery garage floors a lot), and it blows a ton of bubbles. Big ones, too. Even my baby loves it.

power wheels

5. Peg Perego and Power Wheels Ride on Toys, various prices at various retailers.

My baby isn’t quite old enough yet for these toys, but my five year old has a ride on four wheeler she is now too big for, a John Deere tractor and a Power Wheels Barbie Jeep. All were birthday or Christmas gifts. We live in the country and have a lot of open pasture, so she can ride around on them a lot. These toys are expensive, so I definitely advise you to check out Craigslist or consignment shops like we did. You can save lots of money.

I hope you have enjoyed my outdoor toy list. Tune in next Monday for some great backyard play ideas I have found.

So instead of going outside, I am going to share my current favorite things with you. Sit back and enjoy.

These cute shirts from Blog Threads. Proceeds benefit families who are adopting internationally. They’re also really soft and comfy.

This Burt’s Bees lip stain is amazing.

I use this baby shampoo and wash in both my girls and I love it! Sometimes I use it on myself. It smells like Creamsicle.

Well, those are my current favorite things. Care to share your favorites?
