Four early literacy activities

DISCLAIMER: I am an English teacher, but I teach middle school children. I’m not an expert, but I am a parent of an almost-kindergartener. These activities below are some tried and true methods that are working in our household. Feel free to contribute anything you have tried and enjoyed in your own homes- we are always looking for new ideas to keep things new and exciting.

  1. Upper and lowercase letter Memory:

My daughter hates flash cards! Sitting down and going through flash cards is a great way to make her lose interest and not want to play any more. However, if you have separate flash card stacks for lowercase and capital letters, you can use them to play Memory or matching games. Emorie loves this and I don’t even have to fight her to get her to stay “practiced up” on her letter recognition. If you don’t have flash cards, there are tons of printable plash cards available on the Internet. The ones above are from mrprintables.com. m

2. Word sound sorts:

Those of you who have school age children might be familiar with Words Their Way. This is roughly the same idea. I used an old phonics book to cop some pictures of animals on cardstock. I then handed my child the cards with some magnetic letters and asked her to sort the cards. She loves it!

3. Building words:

Cookie sheets are awesome for activities like this, and Miss Priss seems to love it. We created a grid like the one above, and we use a dry erase marker, magnetic letters and a sentence strip to practice her sight words. She seems to enjoy this game a lot! I found this idea on Pinterest but couldn’t find an original source.

4.  “Artistic” word building:

We have used cheerios, pom poms and pretzels. Our favorite way to do this is with glitter pom poms. So much fun!

I hope you all like our favorite activities! Please share some of your favorites!
