24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
I just finished the Bible study The Comparison Trap by Sandra Stanley and it was an amazing experience. I was actually sad to finish it because it was over! I got so much out of it though, and I gained some new perspectives on envy and comparing oneself to others
For instance, the verse above can be applied to comparison like this: when were envious of someone, our knee-jerk reaction is to tear them down. Instead, let’s compliment and celebrate the successes of our sisters when we’re envious, and stir up love in them. This will also help us to right our hearts and remove that envy and discontent from them.
I actually tried this this week: there is someone I’m often envious of for various reasons and I made it a point to compliment her. I found that even though I was nervous about it and I didn’t want to do it at first, it made me feel better. Who knew something so simple could bring you joy?
This week, celebrate the successes of your peers even if they have what you want. You will be amazed by the joy and peace it’ll bring to you.
