Scripture Sunday: John 10:10

Jesus came to Earth and died so we could have eternal life with him.

You will notice He said, “and have it more abundantly.” Abundance is defined like this:

  1. a very large quantity of something.
“the tropical island boasts an abundance of wildlife”
    • the quantity or amount of something, e.g., a chemical element or an animal or plant species, present in a particular area, volume, sample, etc.
“estimates of abundance of harp seals”

So, what does it mean to “have life more abundantly?” What it means is this: if you trust Jesus, you will be blessed. Not everyone is blessed in the same way, so what I consider a blessing may not be a big deal to you, or even seem significant.

Here are some examples of God’s blessings and abundance in my life.

Each day I wake up in a warm house with a roof over my head. My husband and I do not have high paying jobs, and if you look in our checkbook, you will see absolutely nothing impressive. Still, we are blessed with far more than we need.

Our church family is a blessing in itself. We attend a church filled with believers who are kind hearted and who are truly our friends. They pray for us and they fellowship with us, and we couldn’t ask for more. We are fortunate to have a pastor who preaches God’s word, but who is also a friend. We are so truly blessed.

And finally, we have a beautiful family. A family I did not ever think would be possible, that I am thankful for every day.

I fully believe the Lord blesses us with everything we need and then some.

I also believe “have life more abundantly” refers to eternal life with Jesus. Life in Heaven with Him is going to be more amazing than we could ever imagine, and the only way to have that eternal life is to trust in Him.

What do you think of when you hear “and have it more abundantly?”
