Spray Paint Tips

Hi, my name is Angela and I’m addicted to spray paint. There, I admitted it.
Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, allow me to explain myself. I love spray paint because it’s fast, it’s easy and it allows me to make a quick change if I find something that I love but hate the color.

I’ve spray painted furniture, flower pots, signs, lamps, even dishes. Most of the time, I’m spray painting something because I’m trying to upcycle it.
I thought today I could share some of my favorite tips for spray painting.

1. Use a good quality spray paint.

My favorite spray paint to use is Rustoleum American Accents with a built in primer. This paint goes on smoothly and has a great finish. The paint is available in a variety of colors and textures.
2. Prep your object before painting

Make sure whatever you’re painting is clean and dust free before you paint it. This will cause the texture of your paint to dry unevenly and the paint will chip or bubble. If your object has any imperfections, sand them off and then clean away the dust before painting, or the imperfection will be very obvious when the paint dries.

3. Shake the can well before beginning.
This mixes the paint and mixes the color.

4. Hold the can six inches away from the object.Holding the can too close will cause the paint to pool and run.

If this happens, allow the paint to dry, sand the area and clean away the dust, and paint it again.

See how the surface of this table looks pebbled? It was sanded, repainted, and now looks good as new.

5. Allow a coat of paint to dry for at least twenty four hours before applying additional coats. If you don’t do this, you have a better chance of your paint peeling.
If you have any additional tips for spray painting, please share them in the comments. Thanks for reading!!
