Sunday Musings: Word of the Year

In recent months, I’ve shared various Bible verses. We have been using lots of stand alone verses for each individual Sunday, but since it’s a new year, I’d like to change it up and do something…new.

It’s no secret that 2017 was a horrible year. While my intent was to remain joyful through our struggles, I didn’t really do a great job of that. Our pastor preached a sermon late in 2017 in which he mentioned that joy doesn’t come naturally, but you must choose to be joyful.

Why is being joyful so important? And how do we find this joy? The Bible has a number of things to say about joy:

Psalm 16:10 says, “You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” In other words, when we spend time in the presence of God we’ll experience joy in this life and in eternity when we are truly in His presence. Godliness = joy

1 Chronicles 16:27 says this: “Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in his dwelling place.” In other words, living a life in His ways will bring us joy and strength.

Proverbs 16:20: “Those who listen to instruction will prosper; those who trust the Lord will be joyful.”

Romans 15:13: “I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.”

James 1:2-4: “Dear brothers and sisters,[a] when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.”

2 Corinthians 6:10: “Our hearts ache, but we always have joy. We are poor, but we give spiritual riches to others. We own nothing, and yet we have everything.”

There are many more verses about joy in the Bible; this list doesn’t even scratch the surface. You’ll notice a common theme, though. Joy comes from God, but we must choose to spend time with Him: in His word. In His House. To fellowship with other believers and members of His family.

True Joy must come from God, but we have to choose to seek Him. I admitted to you all last Sunday that my quiet times have suffered and, as a result, my walk with God has suffered.

I am in a place now where I need to seek His face and find the joy only He can give us.

This year, my word of the year is “joy.”

Saturday Musings

Happy Saturday from this guy. Things have been rough and stressful this week. My dad is not doing well and we know his time is coming. Thanks to everyone who has found time to send us messages and kind words. We appreciate your prayers and well wishes.

Despite the difficulties, we have managed to find some smiles.

Speaking of smiles, someone is missing a few teeth…just in time for picture day at school.

And this kiddo fed her PopPop some apples.

Here are my girls sharing some mac and cheese at my parents’ house.

And then sleeping in their car seats.

We are spending time with family and enjoying my dad while we have him here still. If things get quiet on the blog in the next few weeks, please don’t worry.

Here is what I’m reading this week:

Saturday

Happy Saturday!

This past week, we were headed up to WV to see our family. It was a short trip, but a great one.

Aubrey thoroughly enjoyed her sister’s vocal stylings.

And Emorie got schooled at the School of Rock via her great uncle Michael. We went to my other uncle’s house where we had a cookout. We saw cousins, grandparents, aunts and uncles, great aunts and uncles… and we had tons of good things to eat all weekend long!! We had a blast, but like always, the visit wasn’t long enough.

This weekend, we are helping some friends celebrate their birthdays and we are getting a few things done around the house. I’m also doing a little reading:

Saturday Musings

I hope your week was as sweet as my girls enjoying these yogurt pops.

Speaking of enjoying, how much did my little girl enjoy this cup of ranch dressing?

She’s certainly had a blast eating this week.

My older daughter cheered in our local high school’s first football game of the season last night. She loved every minute of it, too.

And something else happened this week: I went back to work. My classroom is almost finished.

I’m back in eighth grade this year and I’m so excited. I’ve missed the “big kids.” I’m also coaching cross country this year, so I’m excited about that.

Fitness goals

I’m down 15 pounds but I’ve got another five to go. I’ve gone sugar free, gluten free and I’m really feeling a lot better. I’m also still running and doing PiYo each day. I’m also drinking almost a gallon of water a day and I’ve really seen a big difference.

Here’s what I’m reading this weekend:

Country Living: the untold story behind Rae Dunn’s pottery
Does anyone else love Rae Dunn? OMGoodness, I can’t get enough of that beautiful but simple pottery.

BHG: Create an outdoor kitchen on a budget
I want an outdoor kitchen and I’m all about trying to save money.

Saturday Musings

Last week, I talked to you about how summer was drawing to a close. While I still have one week until I go back to work (officially. I’ve already been there a few days to work on my room), my oldest started first grade on Wednesday.

She loves school, and this year, she not only got the teacher we’d hoped for, but she also has several of her friends in class. I’m so proud of her and I can’t wait to see what all she learns this year.

This kid though? She keeps us on our toes. She’s sweet, cuddly, strong willed and fierce. She makes our lives more entertaining and she makes us laugh. I can’t help but notice (reluctantly) how fast she’s growing up.

Our sweet Emorie got saved and baptized this summer as well.

We went on a week long vacation to Pigeon Forge with my dad’s side of the family. We stayed in this cabin, which had the most lovely views.

We even saw some bears!

Our trip included a three mile horseback ride, lots of shopping, lots of good food, and lots of fun and fellowship. We had a great time and really enjoyed it.

Here’s what I’m reading this week:

Ruta Sepetys is an amazing writer. She also wrote Between Shades of Gray, which is about Lithuanian genocide. It’s a great read as well. This book is set in 1945 and follows the lives of four refugee teens. I highly recommend it.

I just finished this one. It’s an intimate look at the first years of the Gaines’ marriage and the years leading up to present. These two are genuine and humble, and these qualities shine through their writing as well. I loved it!!

I hope you have an amazing weekend. Here’s what’s in store for you next week:

Saturday Musings: a summer recap

What a wonderful, lovely summer it has been. A quick summer, but still a good one.

At the beginning of summer, Emorie turned six.

Emorie also got to participate in a six week gymnastics class at her dance studio, and went to cheerleading camp for the first time ever.

Both kiddos had a blast at our church July 4 picnic.

This summer, Emorie attended Bible School for the fourth year and Aubrey for the first year.

Then, our sweet girl attended Kingdom Kids at our church for the first year ever.

Then, we took a family road trip to Pigeon Forge before school started back.

It’s so hard to believe our girl is headed to first grade this week. She’s had a wonderful summer and she’s grown and changed so much.

I hope you all have a wonderful school year.

Saturday Musings

Our summer is quickly drawing to a close. My oldest is due to start school in two weeks. My own school year will start in about 3 1/2 weeks. As a friend recently said, “Summer should get a speeding ticket!”

This week, my youngest climbed into the rocking chair and “read” some books.

Bed hair, don’t care.

My girls have enjoyed being together this summer.

And I keep getting cute snaps like this.

Check out Little Miss Hollywood!

Life updates:

Our Bible study is now almost three weeks in. If you are looking for a positive, encouraging Bible study that still teaches and convicts you, reach for this one. It’s amazing how Nicki Koziarz uses the Book of Ruth to illustrate perseverance and faith. It’s the perfect Bible study for where I am in life right now.

Trim Healthy Mama & Fitness

I am 100% on plan now with THM after loosely following it for 18 months. I feel better than ever and have lost almost 15 pounds, and 14 inches. I sleep better and my hair and skin are healthier as well. Plus, I still eat many of the things I’ve always enjoyed, just with modified ingredients. I’m also exercising 30 minutes a day. We eat at home more as well, which has definitely been a game changer.

House

We are working now to get organized for the new school year. We have organized dressers, closets, the pantry, work spaces… we are working hard to simplify our lives before school starts. We are not currently working on any other projects.

Saturday Musings

Last weekend my sweet Emorie was in our church’s Bible School Commencement.

Aubrey attended Bible School for the first time ever. She loved it, especially music time. She showed off her dance moves.

My cute little NCSU cheerleaders on Game Day at VBS. They were reppin’ Mommy’s alma mater!

This week, my hubby and I went to The Vintage Warehouse, which is a once a month sale in a town south of us. We didn’t buy anything but we saw some really cool things. Here’s an antique phone booth:

We will definitely go back to their August sale next month.

A few updates:

Bible Study

We are gearing up for week two of A Woman Who Doesn’t Quit, a Bible study based upon the book of Ruth. I am privileged to be doing this study with a special group of ladies. Some are relatives, some are recent friends, and some are friends from high school and church. I am learning so much about myself and about the Book of Ruth.

Fitness goals

I am two months into my Trim Healthy Mama lifestyle and loving it! I’ve lost six pounds but nearly 11 inches. I’m also doing a challenge group with Beachbody and doing PiYo. I feel and look better than I have in a long time.

Homefront

We are almost finished with our dining room and entry way products. Can’t wait to show you!

And now, here’s what I’m reading this weekend:

Saturday Musings

I hope you have had a wonderful week. We have been busy this week with Vacation Bible School, but it has been a great week.

We had planned to cook out and fish with members of our church, but the weather interfered. We did get to eat and fish a little before the storm. How pretty is this view?

And this little cherub was too entertaining:
