Tips and Tricks Tuesday: no-fuss summer decorating

I’ll admit, I move at a slower pace when summer comes around. After the hustle and bustle of a busy school year, it’s nice to decompress a bit and just…be. I like to think my house feels the same way.

My house spends so much time being decorated: we go all out for Christmas and fall, and still decorate a fair amount for spring. As a fellow blogger said, she likes to let her home breathe during the summer.

I agree. While most people do their spring cleaning in the spring, I do mine in the summer. I’m a teacher and summer is when I have the most free time. I’d have a hard time deep cleaning around a bunch of seasonal decor, you know?

Basically, I take what’s left over from spring decorating and re-adapt it a little.

Just two months ago, this same vignette looked like this:

Seasonally appropriate seashells replace bunnies, eggs and nests, and late summer hydrangeas replace blooms more appropriate for spring. Actually, I love hydrangeas but use faux ones because I have a relative who is allergic.

I replaced the tiered tray with this wooden Pepsi crate. I filled it with a tall vase with blue flowers, a blue tea towel, a nautical candle lantern and a farmhouse lantern. I love how simple, cute and country this arrangement looks.

Our July 4 mantle: wooden star garland, candles in glass lanterns, burlap books and a faux boxwood. Just simple, not overdone.

Our spring mantle was similarly styled:

One of the best ways to welcome summer is to simply declutter your decor so your home looks bright and airy.

Add in some neutral elements, such as plants, shells, moss, or a basket.

Throw open those drapes and let the natural sunlight in.

Break out your light colored textiles in light, breezy fabrics.

Summer is a low key time of year. Let your house feel low key as well.

  1. Certainly agree with you about lightening up for Summer. I need to do that as matter of fact. Get carried away with too much clutter and decorations. So glad to be reminded, I needed that, will declutter this coming week.
Been going thru many of projects I print out for future reference, too many but so many want to do. Pretty much any decorations I have out are ones I make (besides few tchotskes from Hobby Lobby or Michaels). Galvanized containers are one such big weakness.
You have a very nice lovely home.
