Tips and Tricks: How NOT to take DIY family pictures

Sometimes, I do things against my better judgment. I knew I wanted some current pics of both my children together. I wanted them so badly I disregarded every good rule I knew for photographing children. I am sharing this post with its appallingly bad photography not only to serve as a cautionary tale, but also to make you laugh. They are pretty funny! Besides, one downfall of the blogosphere is that bloggers often show you their perfections and we forget about the imperfections. Behold, the imperfection:

  1. Mistake number one: taking pictures at the wrong time of day.

What do these three pictures have in common? Well, I’ll give you a hint. It may or may not involve the sun being in someone’s eyes. To avoid this, take pictures around the time of sunset. This time of day does truly provide the best light for taking photos.

I took this one a few hours later, when the sun was beginning to set. This is way better, isn’t it?

Mistake number two: keep the toddler happy

If your little one is tired, hungry, or not distracted enough, he or she just might cry. or throw a tantrum. or just get up and walk out of your shot altogether.

But, if you try again post nap and post meal, you might get this:

I know it’s far from perfect, but I think it’s still a pretty cute picture.

Mistake number 3: Mind your background!

Awww, what a cute shot! Wait, what’s that in the background? An UMBRELLA?

Before you start shooting, take a few test shots to see that nothing weird is in the background.

Which leads me to my next point…

Mistake number 4: Put your dog up before you start taking pictures…or this might happen.

Mistake number 5: Getting discouraged if you don’t have many good shots.

I took about a hundred pictures that day, but only ended up with a few I truly liked.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this little laugh at my expense. I also hope my “what NOT to do” tricks will help you.

  1. Hahaha, reminds me of my attempt at a family maternity photo shoot with baby #2, toddler #1 was getting molars and SCREAMED the whole time, enough that other’s in the park came to check on her to see if she was ok! Waited a month, did it at home and much better 🙂

    Thanks for sharing at #bloggerspotlight

    1. Now that is too funny! Please share one of those pics; I’m sure they still ended up adorable, despite the cranky toddler.
